Day 8

Message

MONDAY, JANUARY 8th

Ministering to my PARENTS in the New Year.

Ephesians 6:1-3 [AMP] “Children, obey your parents in the Lord [as His representatives], for this is just and right. Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother — this is the first commandment with a promise [Exodus 20:12.] 3 That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.”

THOUGHT for TODAY:

This commandment, first found in Exodus 20:12, is timeless. We are always to honor our father and mother. There are many sons and daughters who find this commandment harder to obey because of abuse, absence, or having no relationship with their parents. Whether we are young and still live at home or are older, grown, out of the house, with kids and grandkids, the promise of God will always be true. When we choose to honor, we choose a long and prosperous life on the earth. Sometimes we must honor the position of father and mother and not as much as we want the person.

Scripture

Proverbs 23:2 [GNT] “Listen to your father; without him you would not exist. When your mother is old, show her your appreciation.”

Proverbs 1:8 [NLT] “My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don't neglect your mother's instruction.”

Proverbs 31:28 [BBE] “Her children get up and give her honor.”

Prayer

Father, help me to minister Your love to my parents. Let me be an example of Jesus to my parents. May I always be obedient to Your Word, including honoring my parents. I pray to have a great relationship with them. I want to move beyond past hurts and disappointments where they are concerned. When I give them honor, may it truly come from a heart of gratitude and thankfulness. I want to live a long and prosperous life so I will choose to obey Your Word. I choose to honor my father and mother. I ask for Your strength and blessing in the name of Jesus, amen!

what to pray

  • If your parents have passed, pray for other parents and their children who you know are not in a good place. Pray for honor to be given and received. Pray for forgiveness and reconciliation for the parents and their children.

  • Find new ways of honoring your parents to show your love and gratitude for what they sacrificed to raise you.

  • Make a choice to forgive your parents. Believe in the power of and obedience to God’s Word even when you do not want to.

  • Declare the promise of Exodus 20:12, that all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.

  • Determine in your heart that you will no longer speak negatively or against your parents. Remember, you reap what you sow.
